The Green Moor School Closure
Green Moor School Records
This small school in the heart of Green Moor was closed like so many others.
The parish council at the time argued with Barnsley MBC that the land on which the school was built belonged to the parish of Hunshelf and as the school building was built with funds from the parish, the school did not belong to Barnsley MBC but to Hunshelf Parish Council
For some years a stalemate occurred and the school continued to be used as a social amenity by the parish. Eventually, Barnsley MBC decided that enough was enough and set about selling the school and land.
Many meetings were held, but the crucial item was that the parish council could not prove that the school was the property of the parish. The task was made impossible by a fire many years ago in which many of the early records of the parish were lost. Some say the fire was an accident, others that the then clerk cleared out a lot of rubbish and burned the records deliberately. We shall never know, but as the present Clerk, I have sympathy with a person trying to store multiple years of papers.
The attached file is a copy of the minutes of meetings held by the parish council to try to keep the school for the parish. All attempts failed and the land that was the school playground went to a house builder (Maple Corner) and the school was given over to a housing association to be made into three dwellings for “local” people in need of accommodation. This latter promise was never kept, and recently one of the houses was sold off to a private buyer
